Back at Southampton, with things a-changing?
Still almost completely convinced I can get a degree full-time, but at enough of a cost that the expected utility of a part-time degree would be greater. My personal tutor seems to be focusing on the former, I'm scared to argue my case directly, my friend has done so with an email on my behalf pointing out the specific problems involved.

Signed up for some more societies to-day - the musical theatre group (second stab at that one, if this doesn't work out I shall assume it to be Not My Bag), the small choir (as already trailed on this blog), the Investment Society (playing numbers with a purpose still appeals to me, and in the context of a society I would imagine just the right level of competitiveness) and - would you believe it - two sports groups. One is Tchoukball, and that's mostly as a Fun Thing To Try - it is only because of [info]jiggery_pokery that I have ever heard of it, and it does seem like an enjoyable game to play. (And possibly a useful means of improving my wretched coordination?) The other is the gridiron team - but not as a player. Oh no. I am going to be the team statistician. This wasn't something I'd planned on, but one of the players recognised me from the Super Bowl party in February as someone who was taking it very seriously, making predictions and generally sounding rather knowledgable. There's only so many people like that who wouldn't be of use as a player, and so here I am fulfilling the statistician role.

In addition, I've rejoined the backstage group, and Carly has confirmed that I am likely to be involved in at least some shows as a lighting operator/programmer, possibly thrown in as soon as the variety show next Sunday, more likely whatever the straight theatre group produce second this year (their first show is already known to be using strobe lighting). Edit October 5, 2:51pm; that looks like the Freshers' Play in December, which is apparently going to be a fairly straightforward comedy.

Quite honestly, I'd sooner burn myself out than miss out on these opportunities. And burning out is what it will be, for it seems uncertain that I can go part-time, and frankly I don't want to. Gaining a good degree in three years would constitute the biggest achievement of my life, and frankly anything less would be insufficient to escape my depressive spiral.

Very very very cool.

One thing I miss about university is the ability to join societies of nice people. Redcar is so small that there doesn't really seem to be an analogue. Furthermore, my non-weekly schedule does not really permit me to start a society of the type of which I would like to be a member. :-)
