1:55am: More normality to follow the last two rather weighty posts
Wednesday, piano lesson again, and suddenly I feel back to normal for the first time since arriving back from Fortress Weymouth. Hadn't noticed a couple of things in Us, which are oddly tricky to play at this point for me, but I'll get there.

Thursday, karaoke at Old Fat Cat, for there were technical problems at the SU bar (later fixed, and I could have done both venues as it turned out, but didn't). Finally, they have Uninvited on their songlist, in two different versions - the original, and the Annoying Beat version. I don't need to tell you which version I did; went tolerably well, which wasn't true of another newie, An End Has A Start (first time I've done a song originally with a male vocal in... goodness knows how long, and I'm regretting not doing Misfit - will do that next time). Did actually perform last week too (on my second day back in Soton), and for reasons I can't quite explain myself I opted to start the karaoke year with a Katherine Nash song (Mouthwash). Not that bad a song, performed it tolerably well, and there's probably room for a complete rewrite of the lyrics for comedic and/or serious effect. I'll give that a go at some point...

Friday, first lunchtime concert of the year, the student ensembles, and talk about one to mix me up: brass quintet -> clarinet quartet -> female vocal quartet -> generic rock group. That's two groups for which I really wouldn't want the earplugs (for I have not received my new ones yet) and two for which I really would. Nasty. And it got worse as I managed to lose my keys in the act of taking my earplugs out of my pocket; fortunately, very fortunately, I found them again later, but that was a horrendous period between realising I'd lost them and realising where they were. Somehow, not my first suicidal episode of the new year.

The vocal quartet, ignoring the godbothering piece they sung first, were wonderful, and confirmed that the suggestion that I should write for such a group was sound. Going to acquire three or four volunteers (two soprani and either one or two altos, I suspect the smaller group would be a good deal more manageable) and write from there once I know their ranges and any other quirks to consider.

On air today and tomorrow, 3pm-5pm, surgeradio.co.uk. Choral rehearsal Sunday 7pm, followed by karaoke.
