Regarding the RSPCA's half-baked approach to meat-eating
That's my decision made. I am now going to become vegetarian, and at least some of the money saved on not having singing lessons will go on eating alternatives. I'd already phased out most of my meat-eating at university through a simple meat -> Quorn substitution; the main implication of this decision is to inform others, preventing them from providing me with meat. This might be problematic, as in the inability to make the normal substitution when eating out I may have an awful lot of problems finding something I do like...

...you may wish to inform those who are likely to cater for you more than once in a blue moon (parents, relatives) so that they're aware, and perhaps be prepared to take fish or organic meat when dining out. I would certainly recommend that you look beyond a direct substitution: combining filled pasta with fresh or frozen veg.

You may wish to discuss this further with folk at the uni: I'd be amazed if there isn't some sort of environmental group that might be able to give you more practical advice. If push comes to shove, a quick word with your doctor won't hurt.

Even after more years than I care to remember of functionally abstaining from the stuff, there are times when one's had a fill of lasagne, pasta bakes, and strange creations involving pastry and spinach.

Entirely sensible and rational.

The reason for the direct substitution is simple; there's enough sensory threat from the alternatives. I shall have to embark on this voyage of discovery myself. Pasta's a good choice, but only when I become able to happily deal with bubbling water in a saucepan, something which presently mildly terrifies me.

Carly was considering vegetarianism a few months ago, is a much more competent cook than me, and understands my sensory issues well; I shall have to speak to her, amongst many others.

Fish is the likely compromise choice when eating out. Fortunately, dining out is not a common occurance; I believe it has happened on at most two occasions since our own lunch in Brindleyplace, and that's almost six months ago now.

Fair call, as is the general not dining out policy. Good speed on that quest.
