Part 1 of a two-part post: Jealousy -> motivation
Lyndsay, who directs my choir, has been working on something the last year.

She's written a musical theatre adaptation of The Mennyms, a childrens' book by Sylvia Waugh. It's being performed by the musical theatre group, probably in May.

Jealousy doesn't even begin to describe my feelings. I've had dreams of doing much the same - to the point of starting a musical in late 2004, only to abandon those plans three months, two-and-a-half songs and one plot later - and now to see someone else pull it off...

...talk about a way to remind me of my inadequacies.

And, more positively, to work on them. In an earlier post, I mused that 'some substantive collaborative project may also be a good idea'. I was thinking along the lines of writing a musical, but wasn't sure.

I am now.

Current plan is for a three-way team; me writing music and lyrics, someone else for the book, someone else for the orchestrations. By complete coincidence, that was the set-up for Wicked (Stephen Schwartz, Winnie Hollman and William David Brohn respectively)...

It's up to me to get the ball rolling, by devising a plot, and quite possibly starting the book myself. My role, and that of the book writer, will probably become increasingly intertwined. Whether the orchestrator will slip into our roles is unclear, but I for one certainly won't be much use in his/her role (except maybe for ideas).

Ah, a musical. It'll be better than anything Lloud-Webby writes, that much is certain.

(Incidentally, it's Winnie Holzman, with a zed. She's better known at this end of the conversation for penning My So-Called Life, which [info]jiggery_pokery will be able to tell us all about.)

Thanks for the correction.

The Lloyd-Webber dig seems mildly harsh to say the least, and its validity is in the eye of the beholder. I sit somewhat on the fence, neither holding much affinity nor specific dislike of his work.
