Current mood: very impressed

Instinct at the halfway point of Duel...
...the only one I've not known off the bat is the one relating to a musical. That has to be two Hidden What David Should Do Indicators at once.

1. Not necessarily be so keen on musicals.
2. Apply for the show.

Edit: Didn't get so lucky second half with the questions, but still enjoying the show and liking the strategic elements involved. ITV have the next MILLIONAIRE on their hands, unless the producers seriously mess it up.

And mark my words, they will; three members of the GAMBLING PARTY production team are involved in this.

Apparently Gallowgate are casting out serial contestants - absolutely fabulous, and that almost confirms I will be applying. The only reason for any qualification whatsoever is the lighting on set, which is perfectly tolerable from a distance in a well-lit room on a 14" CRT, but actually in the studio might be far more worrying.

Nick Hancock looks like he's trying to show Channel 4 he got the wrong 1615 game show, and has dramatically exceeded all expectations.

In short - this is fabulous.

Duel or No Duel

Actually, it's more Hang Tough than anything...

Didn't get so lucky second half with the questions, but still enjoying the show and liking the strategic elements involved.

Even from the slight brain-fog of Sunday morning, I reckon I would have beaten all the losers with some lives chips to spare.

As Mr. Travis has pointed out in another place, most of the producers have also worked on Een Tegen Een Dermot O'Leary Fanclub. And I don't recall Mr. O'Leary Fanclub putting any pressure on the people who were faced with a cash decision.

It'll be interesting to see how this one pans out: is the Bad Shirt Casino ruined by Edmonds and-or Hugill, or by the rest of the staff? Indeed, it'll be interesting to see if the production house owner has quietly suggested that he's had quite enough of being associated with fraud, and could use a feelgood show.

Apparently Gallowgate are casting out serial contestants

They have that luxury, at least for the moment. Don't think that's a particularly welcome development, nor an unwelcome one.

Nick Hancock looks like he's trying to show Channel 4 he got the wrong 1615 game show, and has dramatically exceeded all expectations.

Or that the one he got needed a tweak to work properly.

In short - this is fabulous.

It's good: fast-moving and worth sticking with, and I've not said that about an ITV production since Cash Cab. On the other hand, it's a straight quiz with a little twist, and lacks the bonhomie of Get 100. There will be a review in the Week, probably on 3 February.

Yes, that is the obvious joke; yes, the staff worked on the UK incarnation of Endemol's other International Megahit (were they also involved in International Megaflop FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE, in which I can say from being at a taping that Nicky Campbell did pressure players?)

It might not be as good as I thought, it's perhaps not as good as GET 100, but it's easily the best ITV quiz since MILLIONAIRE, and probably better than that show's current incarnation. (CON.TEST wasn't half bad, THE PEOPLE VERSUS THE DESPERATELY SLOW PACE was a couple of tweaks from excellence, THE PEOPLE VERSUS THE BONG made those tweaks and a couple of disastrous ones, but DUEL is significantly better.)

Part of me is perhaps of the school of thought that looks at game shows, particularly big-money game shows, as once-in-a-lifetime opportunities. (That thought is, indeed, used and abused by Edmonds in the Bad Shirt Casino...) There are certainly more than enough applicants, tens of thousands for GAMBLING PARTY alone, and surely at least enough of them have televisual appeal for producers to use them. Perhaps some of the ones Endemol cast off for understanding the value of money, for one has to suspect that's a significant part of deciding the contestants...

Actually... now you mention it, the post-millennium version of The People Versus wiped the floor with Link, and I'm more than slightly surprised that ITV hasn't brought it back. Though they can leave the bong behind.
